Seokchan Yun | Childhood

My name is Seokchan Yun, it means YUN(lighting), SEOK(Stone) CHAN(Pearl-color) and the meaning originates from the chinese character. Most korean have a name of three korean characters, and the first is family name, others are last name in english. Many koreans use the second character as the middle name.

My Childhood

As you know, I was born in korea. In the past most koreans were born in the country. This is the reason why there was no clear separation between the city and the country untll 1980. My country home is Bounghwa, Kyungbuk, is situated below between the two mountains Sobaek and Tabaek which are joined. It's famous for Jeong Do Jeon's born, who played major part in founding Chosun Dinasty, 1300s.

My country was very beautiful and had the purity of nature. I had a good life despite of the poor environment in general. Because my parents had strong faith in God Christian faith have been my spritual background. I grew up in Bunchen, Bonghwa until the age of 10. Then my family moved to a place slightly more urbanized. I went to elementary school there, and high school in Youngju City, the main city of north of Kyungbuk.

When I was in year ten in high school, I had to decide my plan about the future. I wanted to become a missionary, so I thought about studying theology. But I changed my mind and decided to study natural science. The reason was I had a natural interest in science, and it's very important to glorify God through academic research like Kepler, Pascal and Newton. So I decided to major in geology in year ten.

I chose the college in Pusan, because Pusan is located near the sea and until now I never had much time for seeing the sea. As you know, my country is in the mountains. Pusan is the major port city of South Korea, located in the southern part My school, Pusan National University has been very good for me.
